SNBA Disaster Relief

SNBA Disaster Relief Chainsaw Unit

It was around 2003 that Bro. Jerry Redkey, Director of Missions for the Sabine Neches Baptist Area,
heard of the many wonderful things that the Texas Baptist Men were doing
in the area of disasters. Jerry talked with Mike Brittain, who runs a feeding unit from Gregg Baptist
Association. He invited Mike to come to Kirbyville and hold a yellow cap training session.
Forty one men and women from the area took this training and from there great things began to happen.
A meeting was held at the SNBA  office in Kirbyville  on November of 2003. Officers were elected and it was
decided the type of disaster unit to be formed would be a Chainsaw Unit. God graciously blessed
the work and by May 2004 the SNBA Chainsaw Unit was operational.

The need for a Chainsaw Unit was confirmed when two days after the unit was dedicated
for the work of God a tornado struck the Buna area causing considerable destruction.
Trees were down everywhere. Men and Women of the unit answered the call.
Working with the county commissioner, they  began to clear debris from around many homes.

The SNBA Chainsaw Unit has responded to Hurricanes Charley and Francis in Florida,
Hurricane Ivan in Alabama, Katrina in Mississippi and La. and Rita in Texas. It also assisted
in cleaning flooded homes at Lake Stanford near Abilene.

The Unit is well equipped. It consists of a 16 foot cargo trailer outfitted with storage shelves.
God has provided 7 Stihl chainsaws with various size bars, a pole saw, chaps, helmets with
face shields and ear protection, vest, wedges, air compressor and a generator.
The unit also has a small Kabota four- wheel drive tractor with front grapples and a rake on back.

Those who have worked with the SNBA Chainsaw Unit have considered it a blessing in
seeing the joy it brings to those who have experienced loss during a disaster.
Truly, this is a ministry of God.
